Children at risk for dyslexia show differences in brain activity on MRI scans even before they begin learning to read, finds a study at Children’s Hospital Boston. Previously, it was unclear whether this activity difference resulted from the struggle to learn to read or predated the difficulty. Identifying children at risk before or during kindergarten could head off difficulties and frustration in school, the researchers say.
Developmental dyslexia is defined as a severe and specific difficulty in reading acquisition that is unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and educational circumstances. This deceptively simple definition belies the actual neurological complexity that underlies this disorder.
